The Mt. Tabor Builders staff is investing time and energy in the next generation of builders.

It’s no secret that skilled tradesman are in great demand. That demand is twofold, as it comes from companies needing qualified employees to keep up with public demands for the Mt. Tabor Builders mentoring young employees into professional builders and tradesmen.work provided by builders, plumbers, electricians and the like. Experts say the majority of skilled tradesmen in the U.S. are over age 45 and only about 16 percent of working-age adults are expected to enter the field.

Television personality Mike Rowe recently put those number into perspective. “The more immediate mathematical problem revolves around the numbers five and two,” he said on a Fox News Channel program. “Every year, for every five tradespeople who retire, two people replace them. This has been going on for about 18 years, and the math has become so critical and so under-reported. You can’t find a single major corporation today who relies to some degree on skilled labor [that] isn’t struggling to hire.”

This fact has companies like Mt. Tabor Builders in Clear Spring, MD  taking proactive steps in mentoring those interested in learning the trades.

Mt. Tabor Builders mentoring young employees into professional builders and tradesmen.“Every two months we bring our younger employees in on a Friday afternoon and provide them with hands on training taught by some of our more experienced leaders,” said Rick Yohe, Mt. Tabor’s head of Sales & Marketing. “Last Friday we spent the afternoon going over the finer points of wall framing and sheeting.” Rick said this particular lesson included an Andersen Window representative to show the proper installation and flashing technique from the manufacturer.

“It is our duty to provide the education to allow the younger generation the chance to grow and develop their skills.”

He said other lessons have included managing paycheck funds, communicating with customers and installing trims and Hardie-board siding.

“Hopefully these young men will someday train a new generation of carpenters,” Rick added.

“We brought a picture with us of a floor plan that we thought might meet our needs, and several pictures of how we would like the house to look. We had a wonderful experience talking about all of the options and felt comfortable with Mt. Tabor from the beginning. Willie worked with us to acquire the perfect piece of property and, along with (Mt. Tabor designer) Royce Eby, helped us design a custom home that both met our needs and reflected our style.

“The building process took about nine months. We had a wonderful relationship with our building superintendent, Shawn Smith, who kept us informed throughout the build and assisted us with the many decisions that needed to be made. We enjoyed the entire process and had a lot of fun.” — Steve, Sharpsburg
